Vision of the CIHLMU is to enable developing countries to develop own strategies on how to solve their health related problems. Training of scientists that can plan and conduct research is therefore a major aim of the CIHLMU, in accordance with the human resource crisis in health services in developing countries, as declared by the World Health Organisation.
CIHLMU is developing programs as well as links with other existing programs at the LMU or with partner universities abroad to offer a wide spectrum of academic education from Master-Programs up to the PhD-Program in International Health.
Having started in autumn 2010, the PhD-Program is open to applicants from all around the world; a certain preference will be given to students coming from existing partnerships.
The three-year program will be specifically designed for health professionals, who will be able to choose from a wide range of disciplines for their research topic, and for whom a wide range of supervisors at LMU is available in the fields of basic sciences, clinical research, epidemiology and public health, health economics, health systems research, and health governance.
LMU Mentors will be recruited for the program from the wide range of specialties present at the LMU Klinikum (primary health care, maternal health, public health, pediatrics, infectious diseases, tropical medicine, genito-urinary medicine, occupational health and ophthalmology; and the following academic disciplines: microbiology, immunology, molecular biology, parasitology, epidemiology, biostatistics, clinical trials, nutrition, social science, health economics, health services research, medical education and health policy).
The curriculum is designed as a sandwich program, whereby the practical research part is to be conducted for two years within established research settings within the respective students' countries of origin. During this period the PhD students should be supervised by a local supervisor.
Depending on the prior experience of the students, the PhD-Program offers up to one year of course work in modules to enhance research and personal skills. The research skill part will comprise teachings in study design and research ethics in DCs, literature research and publication skills, and biostatistics. Personal skill development aims at courses which will not necessarily be related to the research part of the PhD thesis, but strengthen the student’s capacity for leadership and management in a health system. These will comprise teachings in epidemiology and public health, environmental and occupational health, policymaking in health systems, and leadership and management skills. Please refer to PhD Information for further details on the PhD-Program.
Applications will be directed exclusively through our Online-Application-Tool. Online-Applications have to be inititated through an Online-Registration.
For selected candidates from Low-Income-Countries we will be able to offer a limited number of CIHLMU-PhD-Scholarships each year, covering transport and subsistence-costs over three years. Applications can be submitted as part of the Online-Registration- and Application-Form.
The Institute for Medical Informatics, Biometry & Epidemiology (IBE) offers a Master of Science in Epidemiology starting once a year in October. Together with the CIHLMU, IBE will be able to offer two scholarships for selected outstanding candidates from Low-Income-Countries, covering transport and subsistence costs in Germany.
